Matryoshka Doll

Occasion: January's card from the Universe

One of my new year's resolutions for 2013 is to create and anonymously send a card to someone who could use a pick-me-up each month--I'm calling it "cards from the Universe."

For January's card, I created a watercolor of a Russian doll for my boss's friend Lynn; she's been having a rough time, and my boss thought she could use a little encouragement.

Popcorn Birthday

Occasion: his birthday

Joe is an accountant at a popcorn company in Chicago, so I created this watercolor of a Joe brand popcorn! I really like how playful it is with the primary colors and whimsical kernels.

I hope Joe has a great birthday and gets some free popcorn!

Cupcake Collage

For: Jackie
Occasion: her birthday

For Jackie's birthday card, I created a geometric collage of a cupcake! Jackie's just about done with her MArch and loves design, so I thought I'd do something a little different for her card. I really like how it turned out, and I'm excited to do more with this design concept.

Happy Creature Birthday

For: Lydia
Occasion: her birthday

Lydia is a very fun young lady, so to help celebrate her birthday, I created this fun little creature! He's got a flag that says "Hi!" so as to introduce himself.

On the inside, he's acquired a party hat and his flag has grown with a new message: "Happy Birthday!"

I hope Lyds has a great year and makes all kinds of new friends.

Bridal Shower

For: Beth
Occasion: her bridal shower

For Beth's bridal shower, I created this watercolor of she and Nathan under a big umbrella. His pants are rolled up and she's wearing rain boots to protect them from the elements. Her wedding colors are fuschia, avocado, and lavender, so I tried to incorporate touches throughout the design. I love how it turned out, and had a great time at the shower!

New Eyes Congratulations

For: Makena
Occasion: Congratulations

Makena had Lasik surgery and I wanted to congratulate her on now being able to see without contacts and glasses. I created an eye chart with a hidden message: Congrats on your new eyes. It was a very big step for her and I can't wait to hear about all the things she can see!

Thank You Nuggets

For: Wilson
Occasion: Thank You

My work is part of a ticket donation program, and I was lucky enough to nab some tickets to a Nuggets game! It was an awesome evening, and the Nugs ended up beating the Golden State Warriors. We got a note saying that Wilson was the gentleman that donated our tix, so I sent along a thank you from RMMSC. I hope I can go to another game soon!

Synchro Swimming Birthday

For: Grandma Carol
Occasion: her birthday

Grandma Carol is an awesome synchronized swimmer and I wanted to feature this fact in this year's birthday card. This watercolor shows a very talented swimmer balancing a cake while she spins around under water. I loved using the blue as water here, and I think the colors are a lot of fun!

I hope Grandma had a great day and got to hit up the pool!

Ice Climb Birthday

For: Craig
Occasion: his birthday

Craig recently went on a trip to Ouray to do some ice climbing, so I thought I'd feature the experience in his birthday card. The image is watercolor with some pretty jagged and geometric ice features. I think the card looks awesome and hope Craig has a great day!

Travel Birthday

For: Grandpa Jim
Occasion: his birthday

Grandpa is a great lover of travel, so I created this homage to the journey, replete with a globe, guide books, food, and suitcases. The messages, "eat well" and "travel often" are words to live by if there ever were any.

I hope he has a wonderful birthday and many adventures this year.

Engagement Jackets

For: Jess and Pat
Occasion: their engagement

My dear friend Jess got engaged over the holidays, and as Debbie Dots greeting cards have made a few appearances throughout their relationship, I wanted to send a congratulatory card. The result is this watercolor of the couple with a slightly retro feel--I am really happy with their likenesses, and even more happy for the engagement!

E.T. Birthday

For: Uncle Vince
Occasion: his birthday

I have fond memories of watching E.T. in my uncle's basement when I was younger, and I wanted to pay homage to those memories in his birthday card this year. I've never watercolored an alien before, but I think it turned out great! I missed Uncle Vince over the holidays and hope he is doing very well--I will have to phone his home soon to double check!
